Why is the idea of making a rational, sensible purchase of a reliable vehicle so terrifyingly difficult for me?

nope, that could probably be said for most of Oppo, haha.

In all seriousness, I’m potentially looking for a car, so I’m not asking an entirely rhetorical question. I’ve also been looking at LR4's. Although at the end of the day I’m thinking a Jag XF (AWD, 3.0 SC) is more in my price range.

That’s got the Jag engine so it’s actually not that terrible.

You’re on Oppo. Reliable/rational are not thoughts that generally cross our minds.

Ok, so the engine might not be quite as bad as I think. That still leaves the whole rest of the car.

Of all these, the Rover is still my favorite. Although I love that X5.

Love the Hundo but I’ll probably never DD another one. As a winter car/family hauler, maybe.

I like those wheels.  Carry on.

The final 2010-2012 L322's are probably the only ones that could be considered a somewhat reasonable purchase. They’re no 4runner, but they’re much better in terms of reliability than the early L322's. Just budget for air springs every few years (or swap in coils) and a few other things. Most of the major mechanicals and pretty stout and the electrics aren’t too bad as far as I know.

Also, the 5.0L is a direct injection motor and I believe some of them had issues with carbon build up on the intake valves. Getting them cleaned out every 80k miles or so at an indy mechanic isn’t too big of a deal though.

However, at the end of the day they’re still 6-8 year old Range Rovers and they come with a certain amount of risk.

Your average Rover enthusiast will say that about every Rover model though “eh it’s not as bad as you think! Just likes to blow a headgasket(or insert other serious mechanical malady) every so often! Just’ll take you a weekend or two to fix old chap.”

$5900 for a turbo Cayenne with 175k miles! That screams good decision.

When I first found out that I was to be a father, I was almost certain that a 2012-2014 RRS would be my dad- mobile because  I fricke n love them . I even went and looked at a handsome green one. It was CPO but I thought long and hard about how I’d feel about fixing it all the time even with a warranty, and I didn’t like the idea...So I bought a 1975 BMW from Europe instead...

I’m going to second the “eh not that expensive” school. The Jag engine is reliable with good maintenance (mines at well over 100k and it’s fine) and the rest of the parts are straight out of Ford’s or BMWs parts bin.  Just expect everything to cost double what a domestic would cost.

Price is a bit high, though. It should be in the low 20s, even for an autobiography.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to getting over it! Unless it’s with cars and on Oppo in which case you’re just looking for encouragement.

Unfortunately I think that jig is up to, CarMax reportedly has wizened up and are quoting much more for a Maxcare warranty on these.

My mom was in love with a CPO P38 Range Rover as her first mom-car when she had me. The salesman told her it was a terrible idea for a young mother to be broken down by the side of the road, and to buy something else instead.

Yes but you’d have a Range Rover. Sure, it would often be in the garage but just imagine being able to say “why don’t we take the Range Rover, dear? ”. You know you want it.

That one was in an accident according to the CarFax, but it doesn’t look like it was a major one.

If you do buy one, I’d say definitely take it to a dealer or a good indy shop to get a PPI done on it. $200-$300 is cheap insurance against buying a major headache.

Just take what you would put into fixing a Range Rover and do an LS swap.

And a electronics swap.

And a suspension swap.

And a.....wait, I guess you’ll just be replacing most things here.

Maybe just search for Range Rover shells for sale and drop it on a Forerunner ?

Yeah, the subsequent owner put another 27k miles on it, so I imagine whatever happened was fixed properly. I do agree on the PPI though by an indy shop ! You know what’s funny? the car is in Indy! It’s be at an indy Indy shop.

What are your thoughts on the RR Sport of those years, compared to the regular RR? I personally have never had much or any seat time in either. I’ve never even cons ciously acknowledged the difference in  real life / seen them parked next to each other.

Kinja'd!!! nj959 > Yowen - not necessarily not spaghetti and meatballs

I would say just get the full size Range Rover. It’s much better looking than the Sport, to my eyes at least, and it only weighs a few hundred pounds more so it’s not like you’re really giving anything up with regards to driving characteristics. Plus, the Range Rover is just a much nicer car overall when compared to the Sport. I’ve driven L322's (never owned one though), and I’ve ridden in the Sports and the full size just comes off as much more solid and expensive feeling.

However, if I was choosing between a 5.0 S/C Sport and a 5.0 N/A L322 the decision would become a little more difficult. In that case, I’d say test drive both, sleep on it for a day, and then  choose the one you prefer.

I dunno, we could have bought a nice simple 2015 Explorer, Grand Cherokee or Durango.

We bought an 08 Rubicon with BFG M/Ts on it (crazy low miles if you missed it, but still 10 year old off-road capable truck when we could have bought a normal simple SUV)
